Sir Kenway called all of the available Vigilants together for a meeting. He presented Knight-Initiate Ikon with his new Vigilant armor upgrades and then he told me today was to be my Knight Trials. Sir Aidan would act as my witness that I had performed my task and Ikon was also told to go along to lend a hand and to gain some experience in the Abyss. Both my brothers-in-arms could help me fight but neither was to give me advice on our course. The task was to march the length of the Abyss and reach the Balrog's lair, fighting the daemonic beast and returning with its heart.
We set off immediately. Entering the Underworld and fighting our way through Cultists, imps, hellish hounds and the like. We fought efficently and communicated well. Marching through the Underworld always gets me wondering what the story is behind the place, but today I pushed the thoughts aside and focused on my Knight Trials. We quickly made it to the winding steps that lead down into the Abyss. Taking them two at a time I lead the way, my Brothers close behind me.
We were met by dark orcs, cultists and such. We quickly worked our way through them and made off along a path that snaked its way through the rocky terrain until coming out at a bridge. We were again met with gargoyles, fire serpents and such and we fought for every inch of ground crossing that bridge! We followed the lava river as we set of again, fighting various beasts but barely slowing. Eventually we arrived at a maze formed from stones. Here we started to encounter much larger, better armed gargoyles, some towering over us. After making our way through the maze and the gargoyles we set our eyes on the ruins of the gargoyle city. To say we fought a lot of gargoyles is accurate but does not really state how long and hard the fight was. We left piles of gargoyles in our wake as we made our way through the first half of the city.
The broken city is divided into two halves with a strange chamber between the two halves, reachable by walking out onto a narrow path. Which we did. We discovered Elder Balrons, Balrons, daemons and gargoyles within the chamber, some even rushing to engage us on the narrow path. We held firm and were able to fell all our enemies. Crossing to the second half of the city we encountered great resistience. Gargoyles attacked us from ever direction. We stood back to back to back and weathered the onslaught. Eventually clearing the area of gargoyles. We left the broken city and ran straight into a Elder Crimson Dragon. It attacked so quickly before we knew it I and Sir Aidan had been knocked from our feet. Ikon continued to attack and keep it distracted while we regained our feet. The beast was ferocious and fast, attacking relentlessly but we three had found our rythmn in this battle and after what seemed like days we were able to dispatch the foul beast. Sir Aidan took some of its scales.
After the dragon things seemed, comparatively, easier. We still fought often but it was mostly fire elementals and fire serpents. We made our way along the winding path until we came upon anotehr broken bridge. We could see the large shapes of daemons across the span, so we quickly found a path that would take us around and with the vision of my task about to be acheived we marched into the Balrog's lair...only to find it was not there. We did kill a Balron and a few daemons. We searched the area thouroughly and even waited to see if the Balrog would return. It did not, so with a heavy heart we returned to Castle Hell Gate to inform Sir Kenway of my failure.
Upon reaching Hell Gate we were met by Sir Kenway, who was happy to see we had all made it back relatively intact. I informed him that the Balrog had not been there, that I had failed my task. He wished to hear the story of our trip down there. Which we each took a part in telling. He then asked for Sir Aidan's input. Sir Aidan kindly suggested that we had made it to the lair and it was no one's fault if the beast was not present. He and Ikon also mentioned that we HAD managed to defeat a Elder Crimson Dragon, from what we had all heard it was a much more difficult oponent then the Balrog would have been. Both my Brothers spoke well and it made me proud and also somewhat humbled to have such fine companions and friends.
Sir Kenway agreed that we had reached our goal and we had defeated a greater foe then we had set out to fight. He accepted the scales of the Elder Crimson Dragon as the trophy for my Trials. My Trials Completed. I would hence forth be Sir Gregor Volkan, Knight of the Order of the Vigilant.
